Victorian requirements

Know what you’ll need.

For most couples, preparation is straightforward. We will confirm the documents applicable to your circumstances.

  • Notice of Intended MarriageUsually lodged with your celebrant at least one month before the ceremony and no more than 18 months before.
  • Evidence of date and place of birthUsually an original birth certificate or passport.
  • Photo identificationA current passport or driver licence may be used to establish identity.
  • Previous-marriage documentsIf applicable, evidence that the last marriage ended, such as a divorce order or death certificate.
  • Two adult witnessesTwo witnesses aged 18 or over must be physically present and sign the marriage certificates.

Requirements can vary. Final eligibility and document checks are completed personally before the marriage.

Nikah & civil marriage

Islamic Marriage (Nikah) & Civil Marriage.

We conduct Islamic Marriage (Nikah) ceremonies and celebrate civil marriages. As a Registered Minister of Religion, Imam Moaaz Hawari is authorised to conduct Islamic marriages and register them with Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria (BDM).

Couples intending to marry should lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least one month before the intended marriage date. Couples may also request a Certificate of Islamic Marriage from the celebrant Imam.

To apply for an Islamic or civil marriage, please complete and sign the relevant forms and provide:

  1. Identification, such as passports or driver licences—preferably clear images of both sides of each driver licence.
  2. Islamic or civil divorce certificates, if applicable.
  3. Shahada certificate, if applicable.

Can we do our Islamic nikah and legal marriage together?+

Yes. When all legal and Islamic requirements are met, both can be thoughtfully incorporated into one ceremony.

How early should we contact the celebrant?+

Contact us as early as possible. In most cases, the Notice of Intended Marriage must be received at least one month before the wedding date.

Can our ceremony be conducted in Arabic and English?+

Yes. The ceremony can include Arabic and English. If a party does not understand the legal ceremony language, an independent interpreter may be required.

Do you travel outside Melbourne?+

Services may be available across Victoria. Please include your ceremony location in your enquiry so travel arrangements can be discussed.

Can we have a simple legal-only ceremony?+

Yes. A simple ceremony can be arranged while still meeting every legal requirement, including the presence of two adult witnesses.
